About Us

The Carbondale Muslim Center is home to a multicultural, warm, and inviting community. With members from American Muslims and other countries from Malaysia to Morocco, Syria to Sudan, our mosque represents the world. Our congregation comprises permanent resident families in addition to students and student families attending Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Our mosque is open to everyone.

Serving the Carbondale Community since 1972

Our Story

The Carbondale Muslim Center was built as Masjid Al-Nur in the year 2000 as a 5,000 square foot building. The building was used for prayer, but our growing community soon needed additional space to perform congregational prayers. We often rented facilities outside of our Mosque in order to celebrate together. Many of our early Eid took place at the Carbondale Civic Center. In 2012, our Mosque was renovated and expanded by 13,000 square feet. We are now able to celebrate Eid, host events, and gather as a community under one roof. The Carbondale Muslim community has three imams: Imam Morsy, Imam Haqq, and Imam Kareem
